As the use of wireless devices continues to proliferate, service providers are installing more and more antenna systems to accommodate the demand. Often, these installations meet strong resistance when they are proposed in residential areas. Citing safety concerns, many in the Wantagh community are against the latest such proposal to install six cell phone antennas on the roof of the Wantagh-Farmingdale Jewish Center on Woodbine Avenue. When FEMA re-drew Long Island’s flood map in the summer of 2009, many on Long Island's south shore saw an increase in their home insurance rates. According to WSHA trustee Phil Franco, being insured before the map change allowed homeowners to be “grandfathered in” and their rates would not rise. Mr. Franco indicated that this provision was not widely publicized and for those not grandfathered in with the low rates, must acquire private insurance at a higher rate.
