Wantagh Statistics

Wantagh (pronounced "WAHN-taw") is a hamlet that consists of two Census-Designated Places (CDPs); South Wantagh and North Wantagh. Jerusalem Avenue is the dividing line between Wantagh's CDPs. The portion of Wantagh that is north of Jerusalem Avenue is considered North Wantagh, and the portion south of Jerusalem Avenue is considered South Wantagh.

What is a Census-Designated Place?

A Census-Designated Place (CDP) is an area identified by the Census Bureau for statistical reporting. They are communities that lack a separate municipal government, but which otherwise resemble incorporated places, such as cities or villages. CDPs are delineated to provide population data for an area so that it can be identifiable by name. CDPs are not legally incorporated under the laws of the state, and are often informally called "unincorporated towns."

Although "South Wantagh" is not an officially recognized title, the term is used throughout this page to better distinguish the two areas that comprise the hamlet.

Located on the south shore of Long Island's Nassau County, Wantagh is part of the Town of Hempstead. The Wantagh Public School District consists of 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school; however, residents of North Wantagh are considered part of the Levittown School District and residents in a small area in the eastern part of the hamlet are considered part of the Seaford School District.
